Beetroot (beta vulgaris), also known as beet, has been gaining in popularity as a new super food due to recent studies claiming that beets and beetroot juice can improve athletic performance, lower blood pressure, and increase blood flow. It is a vegetable native to coasts of the Mediterranean. It is an herbaceous two-yearly or perennial plant.
Beetroot is the taproot portion of the beet plant which matures in 50-60 days of planting and weighs about 100 to 150 g. It is normally deep red-purple colored vegetable which has sweet, earthy and tender taste.
Apart from their sweet, earthy and tender taste beetroot is of exceptional nutritional value.
Beetroots are an excellent source of folic acid and a very good source of fibre, manganese and potassium.
Red beetroots have been ranked as one of the 10 most potent antioxidant vegetables and are also one of the richest sources of glutamine, an amino acid, essential to the health and maintenance of the intestinal tract.
